Rants, Generally Recognized As Bad Business Practices ('GRABBP's') and more outbursts where i shoot myself in the foot discussing half-assed green stocks.

I write about new and not-so-new green stocks and green printing and 'green' claims.  This area is subjective, blunt, possibly offensive and completely my opinion.

Labels typically come on liners - This allows for easy removal of the label: The adhesive side goes on the liner which usually has a silcone coating to allow for a quick and smooth removal of the sticker from the liner. My issue is with the silcone coating on that liner. Silicones are polymers/mixed inorganic-organic polymers. The liner will not be able to decompose. If you put them in the recycle bin, they will get separated out and thrown into landfill. There are only a handful of companies out there that are attempting to recycle these liners, but,so far, they require rediculously large volumes that effectively make it impossible for the average company using labels to capitalize on the program. As of now, thee liner goes into the landfill.  Isn't that just wonderfull??? Companies strive to do the right thing by printing on greener stocks and yet the liner goes into a landfill?

Here's the "Recycling Solutions - Liner" .pdf from the dominant player in the field of manufacturing label stocks, Avery Dennison.I love the bottom part 'Sustainability In Action' oh yeah, that's REAL sustainability in action!

Fiberstone

Fiberstone is a new stock composed primarily of limestone. The claimed benefits are no trees (great!) and no water used in manufacturing (fantastic!). I'll be discussing it further as I inform myself about it a bit more.
